President Obama

Today Barack Obama was sworn in as America's 44th president and its first African-American leader marking the fulfilment of Martin Luther King’s sixty year old dream of a black president. His speech was well written and said some good things. His tone was business like yet passionate. For a while now there has been a debate as to whether or not the American government as an organisation is too big or too small, and Obama rightly pointed out that what matters is whether or not it works, a statement that highlights his left wing Democrat beliefs as well as a deeper common sense. But other than that he seems like the kind of leader who will push politics aside and just get the job done to the best of his ability. Sitting here in the UK I hope that he will be able to live up to the huge expectations of him, I feel glad for the American people that at last hope is on the horizon, and I feel optimistic that a good, strong America will inevitably benefit me and my country as well as others.
