The Elephant is Irrelevant
The question of race, I have decided, is one of forgetting it exists. Both racism on one hand and positive discrimination on the other are results of unnecessarily taking race into consideration when dealing with people. The problem is that it is discussed too often. If I tell you not to think of an elephant, the one thing you are guaranteed to picture in your head is an elephant. The same goes for race. The more those tasked with enforcing political correctness force people to walk on egg shells concerning race, the more people dwell on the issue of race, whether it manifests itself as a hatred of certain races or ethnic groups out of a desire to rebel against the ‘pc brigade’ or as a unintentionally patronising kid glove approach to dealing with minorities. Racial identity only serves to divide us, creating an ‘us and them’ mentality which generates illogical hatred. Race really is irrelevant. I am not English, and he is not Arabic. We are both human beings, that is what is important.
