The Recession Lesson

This recession has got me thinking on climate change. I used to worry about it a lot, but gradually put it out of my head in a kind of defence mechanism against depression and despair. I told myself that governments and scientists would deal with it. I told myself that whatever mysterious conspiratorial organisation secretly runs the planet will not just sit back and let the whole earth die. Some kind of Murdochian Vaderish figure up on high will put a stop to planetary destruction somehow. But the recession of late has taught me not to rely on the powers that be. The recession was foreseeable. The recession should have been obvious. But nothing was done to avert disaster. This, like the frog in hot water metaphor, shows that the world as a whole cannot avert itself from international disaster unless everyone is aware and proactive about the problem.
