A Misunderstood Pope

The Pope has got into trouble for remarks over gender identity and homosexuality. Although I disagree with his attitude to homosexuality, I have to say his remarks have, as per usual, been misunderstood. It never ceases to amaze me how easily the kind of people who the press go to for quotes completely misunderstand what has been said in the first place. The Pope said that it was as important to preserve gender identity as it is to conserve the rainforests. He was referring to recent crackpot theories that say people learn their gender identities rather than having it within them innately, and how this theory is destructive, which is a fair point. Yet gay rights groups have claimed he meant that homosexuality is as harmful as global warming, which is a crude and inaccurate interpretation. I’m far from a fan of the pope, but I’d rather have him criticised for things he has actually said rather then for things idiots think he has said. I’m sick of scandals that come from stupidity and a fundamental inability to understand what has actually been said or done. It’s the activists and organisations who jump to simplistic conclusions too soon who are primarily to blame, as well as the idiot media which pays them any attention.
