The Non-Conforming Conformist

I’ve been thinking about individuality recently, and about how people often mix the concept up with non-conformity. There are many youth sub-cultures that claim to be non-conformist, such as Goths and Emos. But in truth they are not. They all dress the same, and get their black sweat bands and chunky clunky shoes from the same shop of mass produced goods sewn together by some forgotten third world child. Everyone who confuses the concepts of non-conformity with individuality will always be in some form of group whether they like it or not. For most people in the act of choosing to be non conformist they are in fact conforming to whatever group advised them to be individual. The truth is that true non conformity is not a pretty thing. Nor is true individualism. I know this because I am closer to the true dual concept than most people. Because I cannot be categorized, people find me unnerving. I have to really work to tone down, to conform, just to be able to mix with my age group. A truly individual, independent spirit does not make the choice to be so. They are born that way. My first ever teacher, way back when I was four, told my mother that I was ‘a staunch individual who absolutely refuses to be a sheep’. Apparently when she asked the class to write a diary about what they did at the weekend, everyone in the class wrote about visits to grandma, or a trip to the supermarket. Apart from me. I wrote about getting into a rocket and going to the moon. Why? Because I wanted to, and because that would obviously be more interesting than what actually happened. Silly teacher. I sure showed her. Four year olds don’t make decisions to be better people. Four year olds are the blueprints for a person’s innate character structure. All the bullshit, masks and theatrics have yet to be put in place. Four year olds are the most sincere people you are ever likely to meet.
