Cut out the spiritual middlemen

I was watching Boris Johnson’s documentary on religious conflict and was particularly struck by a description by a scholar of priests as spiritual ‘middlemen’. That pretty much sums up my view of organised religion. Why do we need someone else to dictate what we do and do not believe? If you believe in God, speak directly to it, not via some other possibly (and probably) corrupt organisation. If I was religious I would use the Quaker method of worship: individual contemplation and spiritual direction as well as friendly group support.
